No More Ice At The North Pole

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

“From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water,” said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado… Read more

The First American Offshore Wind Farm

The Wind, The Waves, The Sun… all resources we could tap for energy, but aren’t. In general, there are many conversations about clean energy and saving our environment, but few actions, until now. The reason windmill power has been put off is simply because people don’t want to look at them in the distance. But now, 12 miles out into the Atlantic ocean, we’ve finally got an offshore wind project approved for the United States.

The new wind farm will be built off the coast of Delaware, about 12 miles off the coast. That should decrease the visual distraction significantly as well as help capture those roaring atlantic breezes that average about twice that of on-land wind speeds. The field will be composed of about 150 turbines and will produce enough electricity to power about 100,000 homes at peak output… Read more

Al Gore Endorses Obama

Yep. I knew it was gonna happen, just like John Edwards… It wasn’t a matter of if, it was just a matter of when. Well, now we know that today, Al Gore officially endorsed Barack Obama for President, saying that “From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected president of the United States”.

So, If we get out our endorsement calculator, that still leaves John McCain with only 422 endorsements and Barack Obama with 17,285… well 17,286 now.

I’m kidding of course… John McCain doesn’t have that many endorsements.

Actually to be honest, both endorsement lists are long, but Obama does have a massive amount more. The real numbers are something around 950 for Obama and about 325 for McCain. The glaring difference between the endorsements for each candidate is that McCain has more military endorsements, and Obama has the endorsement of everyone else. Here are a some of the big names on each candidate’s list… Read more

Where The Hell? Matt Harding Has Done The Coolest Thing Ever

I’m not really going to go into the entire story (Because you can read all about it here), but the idea is this guy (Matt Harding) decided to travel to a lot of places, I mean A LOT. He didn’t have a ton of money, so he got Stride Gum© to foot the bill. Yeah, it’s really that simple. He even made a video of all the places he went and did a nice little dance for everyone… If you wanna watch Read more

If I Had A Million Dollars – I’d Buy You A K-Car (A Nice Reliant Automobile)

If I had a million dollars, I’d buy a nice expedition vehicle (like that Defender 110 over there) to travel the country for awhile. Everybody loves a good vacation, so why not just live in the vacation?

One problem though would be gas so, I might have to invest in a solar / electric conversion for it. But when you’re talking about criss-crossing the country, it’d be worth it. While I’m at it, I’d slap one of those pop-top tents on it and I’d be set. Not to mention that I’d also be set for when WWIII starts. It’d be like an extreme RV! Though it would lack some of the comforts, the added ability to get to the top Rockies, or camp on the beach, or find all the ghost towns lost throughout the US would far outweigh the negatives.

Yep, that’s what I’d do. Well, after I pick up a few gadgets to keep me alive and connected to the world at least… maybe a camera, a fishing pole and a hammock.

That’s What She Said – If It’s Too Small

“If it’s too small, just take your fingers and spread ‘em”
(Said while talking about viewing pictures on the new Iphone)

One of these days I’m gonna write a song called “That’s What She Said” and use all these great lines I hear. I’m imagining a country song about a girl getting mad and leaving the guy. But the entire time she’s saying things like “It’s Been Real Hard” or “I Can’t Take It Anymore”,  And he’s just singing away and saying in a low country accent “Well, That’s What She Said”… Read more

Tip Of The Day – Cotton Instead Of Fiberglass Insulation

Cotton insulation is a green building material that requires less energy to produce and is far more renewable than its largest competitor: fiberglass. Even those homeowners without environmental concerns are often won over by this product that has better acoustical properties and is easier to work with than its competitors.

Cotton insulation may be made of cotton grown for the purpose of insulation or from scraps of cotton cloth or scraps of recycled cotton. Cotton insulation made from the fabric scraps from denim jeans gained prominence because of its distinctive blue color. This cotton denim insulation required that the scraps be cleaned, made into fibers, mixed with a flame retardant and rolled into batts… Read more

Obama at The NC State Fairgrounds

obama.jpg Obama came to town today and it’s always great to see him speak, so I took my lunch break to go see him at the state fairgrounds. Not only was Obama there, but many other politicians were in the audience with me, like John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth, Mayor Meeker, Mike Easley, Bob Etheridge, G.K. Butterfield, Richard Moore, Tony Rand. Of everyone though, I was most glad to see Mike Easley finally pick the right side to pull for since he initially was for the Hillary camp. Maybe with Easley and Jimmy Carter (the last Democrat to win NC in the General election in 1976), Obama can turn NC blue.

This was actually the first speech given on Obama’s new campaign “A Change That Works For You”, based around the economy. He had quite a few new points including a second stimulus package and a many new plans to help curb the falling economy. For some photos and the full speech Read more
